Guidelines for Accelerated Reader Program 2016-2017
Accelerated Reader is a now a corporation-wide project. We are striving for consistency at each grade level as well as a progression between grade levels. Accelerated Reader is considered a part of the student’s reading grade and should be recorded as a test grade in Harmony. That grade comes from the 9 week diagnostic report in the percentage column. However, if a student does not reach the grade level point goal, 10% per point not completed is deducted from the percentage in Harmony. For example: a third grade student has 89% accuracy on the tests, but only gets 4 points for the first grading period. His/her AR test grade would be 79 out of a 100 possible points.
Grade level point goals
1st quarter 2nd quarter 3rd quarter 4th quarter
Grade 2 4 4 5 5
Grade 3 5 5 6 6
Grade 4 6 6 7 7
Teachers may use their discretion for Accelerated Reader requirements in cases where special consideration is needed.
One reader per classroom will be recognized each grading period. These students are to be chosen based on a variety of criteria (such as: most improved, most books read, overall effort, etc. for the 9 weeks) at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Teachers will receive a separate report per classroom each 9 weeks to make the determination. A group photo will be taken and will be put in the Ferdinand News.
At the end of the year, the top 10 readers per GRADE LEVEL will receive an achievement medallion. The highest number of points earned while achieving a 85% accuracy level determines the medallion winners.
Incentives used in classrooms are at the teacher’s discretion.
All first graders will be introduced to Accelerated Reader at the discretion of their teachers.
