Checklist For First Grade Parents

 
If you have concerns about your child’s development, don’t hesitate to talk to me. Our school has special resources that can help. Make sure your child has regular medical checkups too, and take any specific concerns to the doctor or nurse practitioner
Language and General Knowledge
 
My child:
· has many opportunities to talk and listen
· is read to every day
· has access to books and other reading materials
· has television viewing monitored by an adult
· is encouraged to ask questions
· is encouraged to solve problems
· has opportunities to notice similarities and differences
· is learning to write his or her name and address
· is learning to group words together, such as by putting the names of animals in one group and the names of fruits in another
· has opportunities to draw, listen to and make music and dance
· gets firsthand experience with the world—to see and touch objects, hear new sounds, smell and taste foods and watch things move
 
Social and Emotional Preparation
 
My child:
· is learning to try new things and experiences
· is learning to work well and do many task alone
· has the opportunities to be with other children and is learning to cooperate with them
· is curious and motivated to learn
· is learning to finish tasks with pride
· is learning self-control
· can follow simple, verbal instructions
· helps with family chores
