We will be using the reading series by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to practice reading strategies and skills. Most of the time the students will be reading at least one selection per week from the reading textbooks. Students will respond to the readings through writing and discussion. Homework may involve rereading, worksheets to practice learned skills, or journal responses. There will be reading tests. However, the students will not always be tested on the weekly stories. Sometimes, they will be tested by reading a passage they have never read before and applying the skills and strategies learned through the weekly stories. Fluency will also be assessed on a regular basis. Occasionally we will use novel sets, poetry, plays, and short texts in place of the reading textbook. Quizzes and tests may be used with these materials, as well.
