Language Arts

Language arts consists of Writers' Workshop and spelling. Students will write on a daily basis using the Writing Process. There will be a daily mini-lesson about writing and / or grammar. Many mini-lessons will be based upon lessons from the Write Source textbook published by Great Source. Students are expected to apply the writing and grammar lessons in their daily writing. Language arts grades are determined by students' written work, Daily Language Workouts (MUG Shots - Mechanics, Usage, and Grammar), grammar skills worksheets, and quizzes. We will also be using an online program called NoRedInk. This program does an excellent job of teaching, practicing, assessing grammar skills. Students can utilize this program at home with internet access.
Spelling will be taught using the Sitton Spelling program. We will do many in-class activities to practice spelling skills. Students will have occasional Take-Home Tasks (homework) to practice learned skills. In addition to the occasional Take-Home Tasks, students are expected to routinely practice Words to Learn which should be found in their blue spelling folders. Spelling grades are determined by Cloze Story Word Tests, Skills and Proofreading Tests, Sentence Dictation Tests, and applied spelling in writing.
