Recently, students at Ferdinand Elementary School completed a unit of study on the American flag, a curriculum sponsored by the American Legion. Students learned about the flag’s history, proper flag etiquette, and the flag’s symbolism. At the end of the unit of study, students completed a test and wrote an essay to culminate the unit. The test scores and essays were used to determine local winners for the flag education contest.
Ferdinand Elementary winners were Ava Fletcher, daughter of Tom and Lisa Fletcher, and Miles Welp, son of Chris and Sally Welp. Ava is a student of Mrs. Denise Heilers, and Miles is a student of Mrs. Tina Goffinet. Both were awarded $50 checks from the Ferdinand American Legion.
On Friday, January 29th, 8th District Commander, Buckey Honaker, traveled to Ferdinand Elementary to present this year’s 8th District Flag Education award to Ava Fletcher. Ava was awarded an additional $50 and presented a certificate. Mr. Honaker then announced that he had recently returned from Indianapolis, where all of the district winners for the state of Indiana were being judged. He informed Ava that she had won the state competition as well! Ava was awarded $1,000 for this honor and will be invited to a conference this spring in Indianapolis to read her essay to the assembly. Ava is a social studies student of Mrs. Tina Goffinet and a homeroom student of Mrs. Denise Heilers.
