Pike Central Vocational Welding students took first, second, third, and fifth places at the Region 4 Skills USA Welding Contest held at Vincennes University on Saturday, February 11. Six Pike Central Vocational Welding students competed with Forest Park senior Klint Luebbehusen placing first. Klint received a $2,500 scholarship from Vincennes University; and a $5,000 scholarship from Ohio Technical College.
The top five students from each region will advance to the State Contest that will be held at J. Everett Light Career Center in Indianapolis on April 21-22. The state winner will represent the State of Indiana at the National Contest held during the last week in June in Louisville, Kentucky.
Students were evaluated on the following:
- 100 question welding theory written test
- S.M.A.W. process to do a vertical "V" groove butt joint using a E6010 electrode for the root, E7018 fill and cover pass
- G.T.A.W. process to do a horizontal square groove butt joint
- G.M.A.W. process to do a flat tee joint, lap joint and a square groove butt joint
