Katlyn Betz’s Thoughts on the season

Coming into the season, I thought we would make a good run at sectionals and regionals. I never thought we would have gotten as far as we did.

We went down to USI and beat Evansville Memorial and two days later we beat Tecumseh. That was when I realized we were really good.

I would say losing to Corydon was definitely a game that gave me doubts about our team's potential.

I think once postseason started, I didn't really have any doubts about how far we would go. We played every game extremely well and as a team.

My favorite moment in the postseason was winning semi-state. As an underclassman, I never thought we ever could have made it that far. Having the whole community at Jasper with us made it even more special.

Honestly, I had never thought about winning or even making it to state. When we did, it was just an amazing feeling.

It was like an OH MY GOSH, we just won state moment. It was a feeling of our hard work paying off.

It has made me more confident in what our team can do and made me more confident as a basketball player. I think the community support for girls' basketball has grown tremendously and has given us a stronger connection to the community.

It is more important to me that we made a legacy in Forest Park History. We were the first girls' basketball team to win state and that is just extremely important to me.

I would tell them to have fun with their teammates. It helps you make a special connection with them and that makes the experiences even more enjoyable and memorable.

Carley Begle thoughts on the season

I thought going into the tourney we had a good chance at making a good run if we played well and worked together like we had been doing. Everything seemed to start clicking at the right time.

After we beat Memorial at USI, I thought our team had the drive to take on tough competition and be able to compete well against good teams. That would be the time I realized our team was good. I also think we got better from that point forward, considering we had to battle with girls being out from injury.

There was never really a time I doubted the team. I knew we had the keys to make a winning team, we just had to put it all together. I feel like we all got along really well and were able to bring that onto the court with us.

There was never a time when I doubted a time that we could go far in the postseason. I knew that we could keep continuing success if we kept working hard.

My favorite moment in the postseason was running out at semistate. The whole crowd erupted and all you could see were Ranger fans packed into the gym. The community was really behind our back.

Winning state was a dream come true. It was everything I imagined and then more. All of our hard work had finally paid off.

When the buzzer sounded at the end of the State game, I was overwhelmed with happiness and excitement. I knew all that we had worked for, had finally been achieved.

I feel like winning State has changed my life in little ways. People who I don't even know will come up and congratulate me. I also know that younger girls basketball players are looking up to me now more than ever.

I feel like it's a little bit of both. Winning State had always been a dream of mine and to do it with teammates and coaches I had was even better. Leaving a legacy in Forest Park History is important too because people can look at pictures and see the successes we had and know that we put in the work to be the best we could be.

I would tell a team that's going to State for the first time, to not worry so much about the pressure. Play the game you know how to play and do what you did to get here. Do the little things right and give it all you have. Don't make the moment bigger than it is. Leave it all out on the court and you'll be satisfied with how you played.

Coach Lavina Begle

I knew a good run was possible--going to State was never out of the question for me.  I told multiple people that I would not be free until after February 25th.

When we were playing at USI against Evansville Memorial, all the coaches acknowledged that this stage could be good preparation for our potential end of season run. When we beat Memorial, I knew we were going to be tough to beat in the postseason.

Our performance at Corydon Central last year was something I'd like to forget about, I wouldn't say that made me doubt the team. I was hoping that it made our team realize we had work to do to get better and continue to prepare for the postseason.

As we prepared for each game in the postseason; I was confident that we could compete with any team in 2A.

There were so many, playing at Jasper with University was something I'll never forget. The environment of our crowd and just being the "underdog" that night; it was nice to see our team show up and show the state of Indiana that the teams in the south deserve recognition too.  The State Championship game was also one I'll cherish forever. I really enjoyed our time the night before our final game as well as the bus ride home.

I am not sure. As a team and staff we were so focused on one game at a time, I never really imagined the actual end and winning. To this day, I do not think I have fully comprehended the emotions and feelings that came with the end of our season.

PURE JOY! The team and staff had worked so hard all season and they deserved this final accomplishment. It was surreal. I think there was also some relief that we didn't have to contemplate the what-ifs.

I really liked Coach Hasenour's one game at a time philosophy. I think that's something everyone can carry into their everyday lives. If you want to achieve something big you cannot do it all in one day or one night. You have to take a day at a time, or in our case, one game at a time.  This is a mentality I've been trying to stick to ever since.

I would say the time we spent together as a team was more important than winning.  The memories and friendships that were formed that season will leave a legacy for our school and community.

Enjoy every minute of preparation and every minute with your team. You may never get another moment like this.

Overview

In 2022 the Lady Rangers basketball team managed to do what no other FP girls basketball team could do, and that was, win a state championship.

Through the season the Lady Rangers had many highs and lows. They started the season off strong with a 3-0 start. They hit their 1st bump against the future 3A sectional champs, Gibson Southern, losing by 11.

That didn’t stop the lady Rangers though after that game they went on a 8 game win streak.

One of those wins was vs. mighty Evansville Memorial. This game was played at USI. The Lady Rangers were predicted to lose that game but they came out strong and won 48-44. That game raised the ears of the state.

“That game was a big point for us, it showed that we could beat any team if we work hard and play as a team,” said Junior Amber Tretter.

Team enjoyed some Chick-Fil-A after the win vs. Memorial

Their next loss was to the future PAC champs Washington High School.

Then they won 2 more games before their last loss of the season. But this is where the Lady Rangers started to question their abilities.

They went on the road vs Corydon Central, losing 57-34. It was a very rough game for the Lady Rangers.

“I feel like we didn’t play like a team,” said Senior Madison Wathan

The Lady Rangers had a difficult time breaking Corydons press and they were struggling to hit shots.

After that game, Somehow, the Lady Rangers seemed unfazed.

They went on and won the last 5 regular season games.

Then came sectional. Their draw was the hardest it could have possibly been. They drew South Spencer in their first round. The Lady Rangers were ready to play when… The snow came. It snowed Wednesday night, Thursday, and Friday. But, on Saturday, the amazing parents of the Lady Rangers came to the rescue. They all showed up with skid loaders and loader tractors and shovels. They spend all Saturday morning cleaning the parking lot and sidewalks so that they could get the games going Saturday night.

It worked.

The Lady Rangers took the court for the 1st game of sectionals vs. the South Spencer Lady Rebels. After a hard fought battle, the Lady Rangers came out with a win.

Then the next day, the Lady Rangers took on Mater Dei and won 37-26.

Then, Tuesday night, the championship game was against the Southridge Raiders. The Lady Rangers came out all fires blazing, snatching

a 42-24 win to become sectional champs for the 2nd year in a row

.

Next stop was at Crawford County High school.

The Lady Rangers had the 1st game of the day against the rock solid Eastern Pekin. It was a back and forth battle, but the Lady Rangers sneaked away with the win 50-46.

Later that night they played North Knox for the Championship game. North Knox put up a strong fight, but the height of the Lady Rangers overtook them. For the 1st time in 22 years that the Lady Rangers won a regional Championship.

On to Semi-State they went. The Lady Rangers got the luck of the draw, landing the Semi-State game at Jasper High School.

The Lady Rangers took on University, a private school from Indianapolis. There was a lot of doubt about the Lady Rangers ability to pull out a win against the very tall and quick University squad. That didn’t stop them though.

The FP girls came out hitting every shot in the 1st quarter.

“That was prolly the best quarter of basketball we have ever played,” Said Junior Carley Begle.

The game was a nail biter. But the Lady Rangers pulled through. They won 53-44 to punch their ticket to the state finals.

The Thursday night before the State Championship, they had a Lady Rangers night. The players and coaches signed autographs for all of the fans. They also had a video from all of the players from the 2000 State Runner ups. Some of the teachers from FP did a fun little skit for all of the fans.

The next day, Friday, the Lady Rangers set off to Indianapolis to play the biggest game of their lives

Saturday Came. The Lady Rangers headed from their hotel to Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Their fellow PAC team, Tecumseh played before them. As the fans of the Lady Rangers came, Gainbridge Fieldhouse got louder and louder as the blackout student sections of Rangers and the red, white, and blue section of the Braves, formed into one. They cheered the last 2 minutes as Tecumseh won!

After Tecumseh, the Lady Rangers took the court.

They took on Frankton.

It was a battle. But, the Lady Rangers defense held on and for the 1st time in Forest Park History, the Lady Rangers won a basketball state championship!

“This is great, I’m so excited for the girls,” Forest Park head coach Tony Hasenour said. “They’ve put in so much work for so many years. This has been a dream of theirs ever since they were little, and to see it come to fruition is just unbelievable.”

After the game the Lady Rangers embraced coach Tony Hasenour
